Following the highly commended GCSE Grade Boosters D > C Science resources, these new titles provide a collection of activities that aim to improve learners' knowledge, understanding and confidence to achieve grades A to A*.

The importance of an A* grade in science cannot be underestimated. Learners who leave school with at least an A grade in science have far more opportunities open to them, particularly going on to A-levels and beyond.

Through consulting examiners' reports, these activities have been developed in order to break down the A* grade and what is required to achieve one, as well as clarifying common mistakes in learners' responses to examination questions. Focus of the tasks is on the knowledge, understanding and skills required for the ‘higher’ questions, each with a focus on the most common mistakes.

Contents

The GCSE Grade Booster A* resources are divided into four sections containing all the necessary knowledge for exam success:

  • Knowledge Boosters – support widening knowledge and comprehension; they will increase learners’ confidence in the keywords and definitions

  • Concept Boosters - build on that knowledge and comprehension to encourage application of knowledge and understanding; they can be used as a task on their own or followed by the exam-style questions that are of increasing demand – Explain, Apply and Evaluate.

  • Experiment Boosters – encourage analysis of experiments, highlighting common issues and developing the skills required for achieving grade A.

  • Argument Boosters - provide knowledge and encourage the development of and confidence in application, analysis and evaluation skills; like the Concept Boosters, these have exam-style questions of increasing demand.

Featuring a range of activities that are content specific, each section ensures students have all the clear concise subject knowledge they need at their fingertips. The wide range of activities can be used:

  • as part of intervention lessons
  • as homework activities with class work follow-up
  • within lessons as part of a scheme of work
  • for focused revision sessions.

Given the adaptability of the resources, tasks can be integrated in a variety of ways to maximise exam success. Motivated learners can take tasks home, expanding their knowledge at their own pace, but predominantly, teachers can use these resources to engage with their pupils, providing effective and immediate feedback as part of their lesson plans.

Each activity has notes with guidance and ideas, and all tasks are photocopiable with editable features on the accompanying CD, presenting the option to adapt learning specifically to suit individual teacher and pupil needs.

The resource is suitable for a range of exam specifications, including AQA, Edexcel, OCR Gateway and WJEC, for core, additional and triple awards.
